Developmental read

The developmental read is the crown of the AI tools and a Studio feature. Where the revision pass reads a passage line by line, this reads the whole manuscript the way a developmental editor would, and reports on its structure.

What it is

It assembles a semantic model of your entire book, your canon, every chapter in order with its summary and planned beats, and the character and relationship arcs you track, then runs a single considered editorial pass over that model on your own key, like every AI feature. The pass is built for this one job, an editor reading the shape of a book, so what comes back is structure, arcs, threads, theme, and what is working, rather than general writing advice. The notes are presented in a calm, full-surface room built for reading rather than a cramped panel. It is meant for a milestone: a finished draft, or a part you want a structural opinion on.

What it looks at

• Arc and structure: whether the story’s shape holds across its length.
• Pacing: where the book races or sags.
• Threads: setups and payoffs, and anything left dangling.
• Character: whether arcs land and motivations stay coherent.
• Arc by arc: a paragraph on each character and relationship arc you track, judging whether its turns are set up and earned. Deep reads only, see below.

Running a read

Start the read and it works through the manuscript, then opens the room with its write-up. Because it considers the whole book at once, it takes a little longer than the everyday tools; it is a sit-down-and-read deliverable, not an inline suggestion.

Standard and deep

Every read runs at one of two depths, chosen before you start it. Standard is the everyday pass: the shape of the book in short, concrete notes, in around a minute. Deep asks for more and takes longer to give it. Each note carries not just the observation but the structural cause behind it and what it costs if it stands, the notes are ordered so the most consequential come first, and the read adds the arc by arc section: one paragraph per character and relationship arc in your timeline.

A deep read asks for considerably more work, so it takes a few minutes rather than one and spends noticeably more of your own model budget. Leave the room open while it works. Standard is the right default, and deep is worth it at a milestone: a finished draft, or a structural pass before a rewrite.

Your latest read is kept for you and reopens on any device. Running a new read at either depth replaces it, and the room labels which depth produced what you are looking at, alongside its age.

Using the notes

Treat the read as a thoughtful second opinion, not a to-do list. It is strongest at surfacing the structural questions worth your attention, which threads never pay off, where momentum slips, so you can decide what to do about them.
